The parallels between nonviolent communication and Buddhist principles: awareness, compassion and the middle way.
There are striking parallels between NVC and Buddhist principles. Both focus on recognising suffering, understanding its causes, and finding a middle way.
In Buddhism, the first step is acknowledging that suffering exists — dukkha. In NVC, everything begins with recognising feelings: what am I feeling right now, without reasoning it away?
Both traditions also ask for non-judgement. In Buddhism through meditation and mindfulness; in NVC through distinguishing between observation and interpretation.
And perhaps most importantly: both emphasise compassion — for others and for yourself.
For me, NVC is a practical expression of many Buddhist insights. Not as a religion, but as a way of life.
